Each year, the L.A. County Fair honors Community Heroes from 17 surrounding cities during the duration of the Fair. Friday, Sept. 6, is Pomona Day at the Fair, a day celebrating the community’s volunteers, humanitarians, students, neighbors and organizations who make their city a better place to live.
The day’s festivities include a community reception at the Millard Sheets Center for the Arts at 3:30 p.m. A Salute to Heroes presentation will begin at 4:15, followed by a Community Parade at 5 p.m. This year’s Pomona Community Heroes are Jessica Schaller and Eddie Vazquez
Young hero Jessica Schaller is known for her compassion for others. When she discovered that Pomona’s local pharmacist’s son was diagnosed with cancer, Jessica formed “Christopher’s Team” for the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life inaugural walk in Pomona. Christopher attended the Opening Ceremonies and stayed all day prior to a month of treatments. He is currently cancer-free. Jessica continues to raise awareness for pediatric cancer and is currently team captain for her Relay for Life team, walking 16 of the 24 hours of the event.
Adult hero Eddie Vazquez serves as a lieutenant of the Pomona Police Department. In addition to his time protecting the community, Eddie is an active board member of the Boys & Girls Club of Pomona Valley (BGCPV). He has raised more than $45,000 for the Boys & Girls Club swimming pool renovation and continues to play a vital role in the development of the BGCPV program. He is known for being proactive and responding to community needs. His dedication and work ethic make him a prime role model for the youth of Pomona.
To celebrate the accomplishments of these Community Heroes, residents of Pomona are invited to enjoy the Fair for $5 on Sept. 6 when they enter promo code pomona at lacountyfair.com/online tickets, print the ticket and bring it with them to the Fair.
