Each year the L.A. County Fair honors Community Heroes – seniors, adults and young adults – from 19 surrounding Inland Valley cities during the 23 days of the Fair, Sept. 5 – Oct. 4. Saturday, Sept. 19 is Rancho Cucamonga Day at the Fair, a day for celebrating volunteers, humanitarians, students, neighbors and community organizations working to make their city a better place to live for everyone.
Rancho Cucamonga Day festivities include a parade down Broadway and a presentation on the Pepper Street Stage honoring Rancho Cucamonga community heroes.
Taking a prominent place in the parade is Terri Jacobs, one of Rancho Cucamonga’s community heroes. In addition to volunteer work at the Rancho Cucamonga Library, Terri has “selflessly opened her heart and home to Rancho Cucamonga Animal Center animals. She fosters animals, is a dog walker for the center, transports animals, assists in the surgical suite and helps with clerical duties. She was the chairperson for the Ruff Ride fundraiser in May 2009.
Wilma and Elmer Steeve are Rancho Cucamonga’s senior community heroes as a result of their dedication to the Rancho Cucamonga Senior Center, where they have served since 1984. They continue today to assist with many of the center’s special events. Wilma has served as president of the center’s VIP Club for four terms. When the city’s Meals on Wheels service to homebound seniors was threatened with budget cuts, Wilma organized a dinner and auction that raised money to support it. This year her fundraising goal is $20,000. Elmer was chairman of the Regional Council on Aging from 1998 to 2004. In January, Wilma accepted the chair of the Regional Council on Aging for the West Valley of San Bernardino County, “accomplishing more in four months than has been accomplished by this council in the past four years.” Wilma and Elmer have been married for 67 years. The couple is a “wonderful testament to the power of a positive attitude and giving back to the community through volunteering.”
