Description
Become a Certified UC Vegetable Gardener through the Grow LA Gardens Initiative.
Part of University of California Cooperative Extension’s Master Garden Program.
The Grow LA Gardens Initiative helps new gardeners start their own gardens quickly and easily in a container, in the front or backyard or at a community garden. While intended for beginning gardeners, the classes cover a wide range of topics, many of which will be of interest to more experienced gardeners as well.
- Warm season vs cool season vegetables and flower
- Soil preparation
- Seed starting and transplanting
- Growing in the ground, raised beds and containers
- Composting and worm composting
- Plant nutrients: synthetic vs organic fertilizers
- Pest management
- Beneficial insects
- Growing new plants from cuttings
- Irrigation
- Fruit tree selection and care
- Seed saving
- And more…
We believe the best way to learn is through a combination of instruction and hands-on activities. Students will plant one or more seeds, cutting and/or seedling to take home each week and will make seed tape and seed bombs to use in their own garden.
